Friday has been seen as a day of ill omen by Christians because it is supposed to be the day on which Jesus was crucified. Similarly, thirteen is seen as an unlucky number because there were thirteen men at the Last Supper, at which Jesus was betrayed. So when the thirteenth of the month coincides with Friday, it’s a particularly dismal omen.
According to Brewer, the superstition about 13 may go back further: Brewer says that the Romans regarded it is a symbol of death and destruction, but doesn’t say why. The Norsemen regarded Friday as a lucky day, but 13 was an ill-omened number for them because Baldur was killed at a feast where 13 were present.

Of course, in Jewish culture, it is considered a high honor to die on a Friday night, after one has already sanctified the Sabbath. The number 13 as well is a very positive symbol (the 12 tribes plus 1 making up a number of completeness).

Some scholars believe the unluckiness is a remnant of the decree of King Philip the Fair that all members of the Knights Templar be arrested on Friday the 13th. It was certainly unlucky for them.
