What did US President Thomas Jefferson really invent and did he hold any patents?

    Question #55269. Asked by gmackematix.

    robboy

Jefferson's inventions were mostly improvements on various items, such a the plow, sundial, a coding machine, etc. I understand that he never held a patent, being opposed to the system and in favor of any inventions being for the common good.

I thought he invented an early form of a Murphy (fold up) Bed.

Thanks Robboy. Judging from that site, claims I have read that Jefferson invented the swivel-chair, dumb-waiter and so on have been somewhat exagerated.

I like Jefferson a lot, and not just because he founded my alma mater. He genuinely and unselfishly cared about improving his world, while he was in it, and he was darn good at it. Any exagerrated invention claims certainly didn't originate from him, but were likely because of the type of man he was.
