    How did "Dear John Letters" get so named, and what are they called when the man ends the relationship with the lady?

    		John is the generic guy name around here. John Doe, John Smith, etc. I thought that was where it came from.

    I've never heard of a guy breaking up with a girl by letter.

    		I believe the opposite is a Dear Jane letter. I'm not sure how they were named Dear John other than the name was common.
