Agent orange (paraquat) was used as a defoliant in the Vietnam "police action." Is it still used today in or by the US, and if so, what is it called now?

    Question #55420. Asked by dejavucub4. (Feb 23 05 2:18 PM)

In early 1971, the U.S. Surgeon General prohibited the use of Agent Orange for home use because of possible harmful effects on humans and on June 30, 1971, all United States defoliation operations in Vietnam were brought to an end.

Always been available under that name or as paraquat. If you accidentally drink any, DO NOT drink water but get medical help immediately. Otherwise, it's not too bad as those things go. Breaks down when it gets to the soil.

Paraquat is a herbicide and quite toxic until it has been absorbed into the ground, which is why its use is restricted in many countries and banned in some. It is being phased out of amateur gardening products allowed to be sold in the EU at the moment (farewell "Pathclear"!)

But Agent Orange isn't the same substance. One of the constituents of Agent Orange (2,4-D) is very widely used around the world (including in the US) as a herbicide and is also subject to some restrictions in various countries because it is toxic if swallowed or inhaled. But the deadly 2,4,5-T component of Agent Orange which carried the dioxin contamination is banned in most places I think.

I hope it's not in use anymore. My urologist was aghast at what it had done to my system when he analyzed my testicular biopsy. It's not fun stuff, and it's certainly not good for you.
