Yep, pretty sure you're talking about Sherman and Savannah. Legend also has it that he had a mistress there, and for that reason spared the city, but he did present Mr. Lincoln the 'gift' of Savannah as a Christmas present on Dec. 22, 1864.

Sorry, I wasn't saying anyone was wrong, it just seems there are two correct answers. Perhaps Alphawolf has confused the two answers, thinking Sherman said Port Gibson was too beautiful to burn, since he obviously didn't think Savannah was correct.

lol. the most north I've ever been in my whole entire life was in virginia (I'm from Mexico) and that was for just one or two days.
hmm... well... I guess they were wrong but I was told sheridan didn't want to burn down raleigh (NC) because of that.
