Vinal recordings had a simular time capacity when you count both sides of the disc?

CDs were orignally set to the odd period of about 72 minutes because that is the length of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - allegedly the favorite piece of the head of Sony at the time.

You can also get 18 four-minute tracks on, so maybe 72 minutes isn't such an odd number.

The Japanese have always taken to Beethoven's music for some reason. They play it at New Year as well.
I'm presuming here that the head of Sony was Japanese.
