When the moon rises each night, why does it rise in the northeast some nights, east on others and in the southeast later?

Because it is orbiting the Earth about the same way the Earth orbits the sun - not exactly around the equator, but only approximately around that line. I'm not entirely sure what the level of the moon's wobble is.
