Georges-Henri Lemaître in 1927, though he didn't call it that. Fred Hoyle, the astronomer, first used the expression in around 1950 or so, but he didn't subscribe to the theory and used what he considered to be a mocking turn of phrase. Feb 25 05, 12:34 PM
