USS Tanger opened fire at 7:58 at torpedo planes. The Capt. was C. A. F. Sprague. At 8:43 the USS Curtiss fired on a mini sub in the harbor. The USS Monaghan sank the same sub with depth charges at 8:45 Feb 27 05, 11:10 AM

According to the programme I watched earlier today on discovery TV, and various web-sites I've checked including http://www.janesoceania.com/hawaii_pearl/ it was USS Ward under the command of Capt. Outerbridge which fired the first shots and sank a Japanese miniature submarine. It was not until the sub was discovered in 2002 that confirmation of the Ward gunners incredible accuracy was obtained. Feb 27 05, 5:56 PM
