Who was Yankee Doodle and why did he stick a feather in his hat and call it macaroni?

    Question #55707. Asked by elizabethmc.

He was trying to imitate Macaronies - the 'chav' of they day. All dressed up, full of themselves, and nowhere to go...

An american nickname by the British, and he stuck a feather in his hat was slang that he was friends with the Native Americans

I thought quite a few of the Native Americans fought on the side of the British. I've always taken the rhyme to indicate a certain ignorance of fashion on the part of the colonials. Mind you, I take very little notice of fashion. Sooner or later it will catch up with me......

I wore a lot of it once at our Christmas party. I had to take it off as it was so hot.

Americans seem to have always had a sense of self-deprecating humor, which becomes particulaly effective when held up against the arrogance and pomposity of those who've come up with the short straw in altercations with us. And, luckily, we've managed to confine tinsel dressing to certain parts of the Left Coast.

Apparently the British too can have a nice sense of fun in their use of clothing. When they captured Washington in 1814, they flew a pair of President Madison's white pantaloons from the flagpole above the White House (as it was later named). Meanwhile, being somewhat hungry after the day's exertions, they helped themselves to his dinner downstairs.
