When people pay off a bill why do they write the phrase "paid in full" on the bill? Why not something else?

Why shouldn't they? It takes no effort, does no harm, and makes it legally clear there is no outstanding or residual payment due.

When the Devil comes for your soul, he doesn't accept partial payments.

You're right, piquero. I just wondered why that phrase in particular.
robboy, you think the devil's coming for my soul?
Don't you know my soul has already been sold to Bristol University?

Just trying to think what else you could put. It is customary (and practical) to add 'by cheque' if that is relevant, because the payment has been made but not received, if you see what I mean. Mark it 'paid in full' and the cheque bounces and you're up the creek....

I sold my soul to the Devil about 10 years ago....about six months ago I saw it going cheap at a garage sale.

Just speaking in general terms, ci, just sort of what I heard, you see. I'm from the south and wouldn't know, naturally, how this works. Yes...

I guess this is one of the few phrases that has no acceptable substitutes.
