Who started the rumour that Salieri poisoned Mozart?

Question #55718. Asked by shady shaker.

Salieri - In his last years he suffered from senility and allegedly said that he had poisoned Mozart. The tale reached Beethoven and many others. Constanze, fanned the rumour's flame by endorsing it; she also believed that Salieri had plotted against her husband, she claimed. This rumour was denied by many of Mozart's closest associates including his personal physician who reported that Wolfgang had died of a fever that was epidemic at that time in Vienna.

In fact, Salieri and Mozart actually respected each other as musicians during Mozart's lifetime. Salieri recognized Mozart's gifts as a musician and envied them, while Mozart envied Salieri for how he found so much favor with the authorities (the monarchy). Salieri went on to become known as the teacher of other composers whose main common bond was that most of them wrote masterpieces, among them were Beethoven and Schubert. Most composers and musicians throughout the years knew that Salieri wouldn't have ever actually killed Mozart by poison or any other means. Nevertheless, when the play Amadeus came out told from Salieri's (fictitious) perspective, the writers knew the myth better than anyone knew the truth.

When Brahms was 60 and had the flu, his friend and biographer found him in a terrible mess ("he seemed to have no idea what a fever was" the biographer wrote). Brahms suggested that the proper solution was to go down to a bar for a few pints, but the friend suggested bedrest. When it became clear that the composer apparently needed some convincing, the friend raised the idea that it might have been influenza that killed Mozart. Then Brahms took to his bed.
