    Who was the first person to be sentenced to Alcatraz when it first opened?

    		In 1861 "The Rock" was first used as a prison by the Union for captured Confederate soliders, don't know the name of the very first inmate however, sorry.

    		Actually, shaman is correct in saying it was used as a military prison many years earlier.
