    Inspired by gmack's cobbler question, how about the word given for a composition of five items with four at the corners of a square and one in the middle?

    Question #55793. Asked by peasypod. (Mar 09 05 5:48 AM)

    Darn. Beaten to it by nimble-fingered-mibby. Reduced to adding a bit of bonus information to excuse myself posting second - the quincunx was a standard formation employed by Roman legions.

    I was orginally foled by the idea of objects. Also Carfax - corruption of quadrifurcus - same thing with four.
    Have a look at these!

    I've never been quite sure how quincunx comes from Latin for 5/12 when it is surely 5/9.

    quinque=5 and cunctus=joined

    Yet the OED, who like to put "origin uncertain" when they aren't sure agree with the Phrontistery that it comes from the Latin "Quinque uncia", i.e. five-twelfths.
