Boxing - The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel

    Lyric is a little off:

    The Boxer

I am just a poor boy.
    Though my story's seldom told,
    I have squandered my resistance
    For a pocketful of mumbles,
    Such are promises
    All lies and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear
    And disregards the rest.

I never took it that the person speaking in the first person in that song was actually a boxer, since the boxer is described in the third person in the last verse. I'm not sure it is made clear WHAT profession the person singing the song is in, though Simon often wrote more or less about himself.

    Aha. Here it is:

Down towards the bottom, you'll see the song is not written about a boxer, but about an outsider. A boy who leaves home to find his fortune. Simon admits the song is autobiographical, even if he didn't mean it that way when he wrote it.

So, the "I" in "I am just a poor boy" doesn't neccessarily have a sport. We don't know what he does, but he is probably a singer.

Whatever you like. Still, the person speaking in that song is not a boxer. There IS a boxer IN the song. But the profession of the person speaking from the first person isn't boxing.
