A Canadian soldier and veterinarian, en route to a training camp in Quebec in 1914, purchased an orphaned black bear cub. Not long afterwards he was sent to France for WWI. He loaned the bear to a zoo for safe-keeping until he returned from the war. This bear became famous, who was he?

Harry Colebourn named the bear Winnie (after Winnipeg), and the bear became Winnie-The-Pooh.

Nice One gt,
A.A. Milne often took his young son, Christopher Robin, to the zoo, and Christopher named his teddy bear "Winnie-the-Pooh" after Winnie. Milne went on to write several best-selling children's books about Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh.

Sadly, Growler, the toy bear which the original illustrations of Pooh were based was torn apart by EH Shepard's dog.
Pooh merchandise generates more revenue for Disney than Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto combined.
