This island has been known by two other names besides the one it is called today. It was once named after pirates who were hung there, and then the Dutch named it after an aphrodisiac. Later on, a guy bought it and named it after himself. Where is it? Actually, not that it makes much difference in finding the answer, but the aphrodisiac was first, then the unfortunate pirates.

Ellis Island was named after Samuel Ellis, a New York merchant who at some point during the American Revolution became the owner of a muddy little island in New York's bay. Native American had named it Gull Island after the seabirds that flocked there. The governors of Nieuw Amsterdam bought it in 1630, renamed it Little Oyster Island and proceeded to harvest shellfish. When pirates were executed there it became Gibbet Island. In 1808, when it was still owned by the Ellises the defense conscious federal government bought if for $10,000 and it became a fort. But the Ellis name remained.
