I just heard this news on the BBC World Service. Pte. Beharry is the first British serviceman to win the Victoria Cross since the 1982 Falklands war, and the first surviving recipient in 40 years. As mibby says, good on him!

Yes, it's a measure of how tough it is to be awarded the VC that a large majority (approaching 90% I believe) have been collected by next of kin.

Bryan James Budd VC, (16 July 1977 - 20 August 2006) was a Corporal in the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment killed while on active service in Afghanistan. On 14 December 2006 it was announced by the Ministry of Defence that Budd would be posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
