Pedro, who succeeded to the throne of Portugal in 1357, had been forbidden to marry the woman he loved by his father, Alfonso, who was afraid that the father of the woman, Dona Ines, daughter of a Galician nobleman, would exert undue Spanish influence on the throne of Portugal. However they married in secret anyway, and Alfonso, enraged, had his daughter-in-law murdered. So, when Pedro succeeded to the throne, he had her body exhumed, and forced his court to acknowledge her as queen by kissing her decomposing hands.
