Quote from introduction to a GWR interview with Sir Paul McCartney: "Sir Paul McCartney...currently holds 22 Guinness World Records - more than other person. He holds 16 records as a member of the Beatles......He also holds world records in his own right.......

(Guinness World Records 2005 - Special 50th Anniversary Edition.)

Never heard of Ashrita Furman, gmack. What do you reckon?

If you haven't heard of him I repeat, see Q40975.
I suppose the current holder depends which records the book decided to include this year which is now fairly random.

"The Guinness Book of Records" used to be a more comprehensive reference book with a proper index to records. Each year you could compare the biggest, smallest, oldest, fastest, strongest and so on with previous years.
Some time in the 1990s the book dumbed down, put in more pictures and became more celebrity focussed. Notice how the index is now one of record holders rather than records (e.g. "Juggling: most balls" or "Cats: largest"). As a result, I do think the book now tailors records to fit famous people so someone like Paul, impressive as the Beatles' many world records are, is now more likely to hold multiple records than someone attempting to break several skill and endurance records like Ashira.
