Isn't America a continent? Or rather two continents which comprises a number of countries including of course the United States of America which as mooseman correctly states (there's a pun) has fifty states. Other American countries also have states including the country just to the south of the USA, Mexico - or to give its correct title, Estados Unidos Mexicanos (United Mexican States.) The states of Mexico are listed at http://www.fotw.net/flags/mx-.html and I'm pretty certain there are other countries in America which also have states! Mar 25 05, 8:41 AM

Well, America on its own can mean North and South America, but these days is more commonly a synonym for the USA, while the continents (with the West Indies) are usually called the Americas. We often make fun of US posters for being Americocentric in their thinking and in some questions where they don't tell us they are talking about the US, I think we are quite right to pick holes. However, I think that using "America" to mean the US is forgivable! For the record: Canada has provinces and territories, US - 50 states Mexico - 31 states Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, etc are divided into districts or provinces.
