What is meant by the "Werther Effect" and what is its origin?

Question #56180. Asked by mochyn. (Mar 25 05 2:21 PM)

It originates from a book by Goethe, "The Sufferings of Young Werther" in which the eponymous hero sits at a desk with a book open in front of him and shoots himself. It led to a spate of 'copycat' suicides over the next few years, to the extent that the book was banned in some countries. The "Werther Effect" refers to the fact that people are often influenced to do drastic things such as suicide in response to a similar act from someone that they know or admire.
