Why are hidden features on a DVD called Easter Eggs and which was the first DVD to have them?

Hidden features on DVD's are called Easter Eggs because that is what hidden features on software of all types has been called for decades. Early examples of them were included on some Atari cartridges in the late 1970's. I'm not sure anyone is sure WHY they're called Easter Eggs, except they're hidden and they're fun. People all over the world have been going on software "Easter Egg Hunts" for about as long as people all over the world have had computers. So, the DVD nomenclature is just a carryover from software programming. Now, the first DVD to have one... Hmm... I'd say you're only going to be able to find out (MAYBE, if you're lucky) the first DVD to have a well-known one, because programmers and movie editors are always adding their personal "signatures" to media. There may be Easter Eggs on a LOT of DVD's that people don't even know about, so figuring out which one was first will be tough. Mar 26 05, 9:31 PM
