What would they talk about?
Giraffe 1: Nice leaves. What are you eating?
Giraffe 2: Oh, just leaves.
Giraffe 1: Oh, wow. Leaves?
They don't have the vocal chords, you see.

Somebody should tell David Schwimmer and the makers of Madagasgar.

I have often heard that giraffes aren't silent, contrary to popular belief. The following site has a link to audio recordings of giraffe noises (I'm not connected to speakers so can't say what noises they are).

Giraffes have vocal cords. They can bleat like horses or sheep (though the sound would be a bit deeper). What gives humans the ability to speak but not the other mammals is not the presence of vocal cords but rather a lowered larynx. For the gift of speach the price we paid was great, as other mammals can breath while they swallow food without worrying about choking.
