Question
#56265. peasypod
asks:
We all know about Archimedes and his bath time adventures, but what happened when he was playing in the sand one day? (And I'm not talking about a Sand Reckoner, by the way.)

He got narky with a Roman, and the Roman got narky with him. Served him right. He should have used a blackboard instead of drawing in the dirt. The light catchment of a blackboard is far superior, with less chance of obstruction. There's less chance of trampling, as well.

Um...I think...was it the other guy...
I'll just say it.
One of the geniuses was doing calculations in the sand when his city was invaded. One of the soldiers stepped on his calculations and he got upset. He was killed because the invaders were so scared of him/angry with him for all the defenses he invented for the city.
Now, I'm not very good with names, so if this wasn't Archimedes' story, I'm very sorry. I'd be glad if someone could tell me whose story it is.

Narky is correct Baloo. When the Roman consul Marcellus conquered Syracuse, he instructed his men that Archimedes was not to be harmed. But Archimedes was run through by a sword when he begged a Roman soldier not to destroy geometrical figures he had drawn in the sand.
Now, anyone want to explain the Sand Reckoner while we're here?
