I think I remember reading recently that the octopus does this to deter predators.

Some of these are octopuses in areas where coconuts fall into the water, and they bunch themselves up and look like drifting coconuts while tiptoeing off. The other one waves six of its legs to look like seaweed, whilst escaping at 14cm per second on the remaining two. For pics, see New Scientist April 2nd 2005, page 19.
