Mt. Pisgah near the Jordan Valley

Yaarbiriah

Pisgah is actually simply the Hebrew word for mountain peak. Across the Jordan rift valley from Israel, the Jordanian escarpment rises to the Jordanian plateau, called Moab back then. Moses probably looked out toward the west across the rift valley from the edge of this plateau, at the top of the escarpment. The exact location is unknown but it would have been level with some point along the lower Jordan not far north of the Dead Sea, possibly about the latitude of Jerusalem or Jericho as that stretch would be an ideal place for a river crossing.
