The burning of the ballot papers dates back to at least the 1400s while the signal of white smoke only dates back to 1914 and the election of Benedict XV. Pope John Paul II has introduced bells in addition to the smoke to avoid the confusion in past elections where people kept imagining the black smoke contained white amoke.
