A maven can be a person who has special knowledge or experience; an expert.
It derives from the Yiddish meyvn, from Hebrew mbīn, active participle of hbīn, to understand derived stem of bīn, to discern.
It also means someone who is dazzlingly skilled in any field an ace, adept, champion, sensation, mavin, virtuoso, genius, hotshot, star, superstar, whiz, whizz, wizard, wiz.
In other words, a right old smartypants.
