I've had some confusion with a definition. In typography, what is "leading" actually?

In modern computerised typesetting, leading refers to the depth of the imaginary block the letter is built on. Commonly measured in points, but I occasionally use ciceros. If your letter is 12 point and your leading is 12 point, the top risers of the line below will just miss the descenders of the line we're working on. For clear reading, you want at least 10% leading, which is to say for 12 point type, add 10% (1.2) so your leading will be 13.2 points. Used to be done in manual setting with strips of actual lead (or typesetters metal) put in between the lines of little letter blocks.

Thank you. When defined as "space between lines" the leading doesn't seem to fit in the number of lines we've got...It was very confusing.
