Actually, that's only 3 in the last 400 years. I need to review this whole counting on my fingers thing.

So that makes what ration of saints to non-saints among popes?

There were certainly some Big Guns amongst them.

The number of official popes seems to be 263 (not counting the various antipopes who cropped up during the Great Schism). So, that would be almost 30% who are saints. A rather high number, but almost every pope up to Boniface II (530-532) is considered to be a saint.

Let's not forget that we have lost two popes within the last couple of weeks. Shortly before the death of John Paul II the world was deprived of the saintly presence of Pope Gregorio XVII.

Grogorio's demise has been rather overshadowed by the illness and subsequent death of JPII, on the flimsy grounds that he was barking mad and had appointed himself without troubling any of the cardinals, so here is a brief obit:

Well, damn, Stew: I've been just dying to visit Barcelona.

Hey, Arpeggionist: look at insane's question about the word "Elyon." Stew and I figure you can answer it.

The word "Elyon" is Hebrew for "highest" or most lofty or superior. In ancient polytheistic civilizations each had a different god in the position of the "El elyon" - the highest deity.
