Vermeer's model for "The Astronomer" and "The Geographer" (both ca. late 1660's, I think), may have been scientist Anthony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723). Among other things, he was an inventor of microscopes, and Vermeer does seem to have associated with him and possibly been influenced by his researches into optics.

Yay Lanfranco! The name Leeuwenhoek means "Lion's Corner".

I believe his spelling for his first name was Antonie, the Dutch method for spelling it. I think I used this as one of the questions in my Jan Vermeer quiz. Nitpicky, I do realize, but we all want to be right. We are trivia buffs, correct?
