A question on "University Challenge" recently said that Frank L Baum decided against the name "Emerald City" for his first Oz book as books with jewels in the title were considered unlucky. Why should that be?

Question #56617. Asked by gmackematix. (Apr 11 05 6:13 PM)

I wondered about this - what about the highly successful "Moonstone"? What a pity St Hilda's didn't win - super teamwork - whereas Manchester seemed to be just one bloke who doesn't even seem to be doing a degree.

I also wanted St Hilda's to win and not just because I found one of the girls quite attractive of course!
Ahem. Anyway, Mr Baum clearly changed his mind on this as one of the later Oz books has "Emerald City" in the title.

I always assumed it was the Publisher that was pedantic about superstitions.
