Why do press releases, in North America anyway, usually have "-30-" at the end? What does this mean or symbolize?

Question #56618. Asked by an alias. (Apr 11 05 7:41 PM)

The symbol -30- indicates that the press release has come to an end. You can also use ###. This practice may date back to the use of teletype machines. One release could quickly follow another, so newspapers and other media needed to know where to rip off the page. (My father was an editor with a wire service, so I remember these machines clearly.) Why -30- was chosen I don't know.
