Apart from ancient fossil records, when were elephants first recorded as being seen in Britain?

Britain saw its first elephant in 1254 when Louis IX presented an African elephant to Henry III. http://www.bornfree.org.uk/elephantfree/elefree12.htm

I believe that Claudius brought some over, following his invasion, in about 60AD

Did a quick Google - apparently it was 43AD!

According to http://www.camelotintl.com/heritage/castles/south_east/colche.html the first elephants in Britain walked through Colchester

Sorry for the delay in replying. Rick is right so yay to him. In 43 AD the Emperor 'Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus' (or Claudius for short), brough about 40 elephants to support his invasion of Britain. If that didn't make the Brits respect the Romans, nothing ever would!
