At the moment a tie cannot happen because there is an odd number that are eligble to vote. According to one site there are 117.

A tie could still be possible. Remember that there are not only two candidates. Any unmarried Catholic male under 80 is eligible to be elected pope.

Quite simply, a new vote would be taken, and this process would continue until a clear 'winner' emerged.

The problem of not being able to choose would be hanging around their necks.

doesn't it have to be unanimous?

No. The winner must have received two-thirds of the vote. Under new rules created by John Paul II, if there is no winner after 13 days, a simple majority can elect the Pope. I think 115 Cardinals will be voting, since two of the eligible electors are ill, so the new Pope could be elected by only 58 of them.

They should also open it up to non catholics to avoid being accused of discrimination
