Can anyone identify this tree? It has cone shaped spikes of furry, dark red flowers in summer and autumn, and the leaves are long, and each has 7-13 individual, tear shaped leaflets. It looks a bit like a giant Celosia. Can anyone help?

Working of limited information, of course--how tall, color leaves, bark description, what climate, etc--but it sounds a lot like a callistemon, better known as a 'Bottle Brush'. They're smallish trees, known for their beautiful plumes of color. Here's a good pic.

That's not it. The flowers are dark red, cone shaped, and it has long, segmented leaves with leaflets. They've become very popular in the UK...

Rhus typhina - a sort of sumach. Throws up suckers like crazy, and grows into a small branched tree. Bark is sort of velvety. I love them.

Forgot to add link to picture http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/factsheets/trees-new/rhus_typhina.html and to say they're hardy in the UK.
