How much alcohol can you have and still legally be able to drive?

    Question #56694. Asked by elizabethmc.

There is no quantitive answer to this question, Liz. Everyone's reaction to alcohol is different. As a general rule, women are likely to become affected more quickly. Your safest bet is not to drink at all. If you do, sip your drinks, and NEVER leave your drinks unattended. The alternatives are to have a designated (sober) driver or take a bus or taxi. Whatever the occasion is, have fun, won't you, but don't overdo the vino!

In the UK it’s illegal to drive with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. That’s a concentration of 0.08 per cent.

You can’t really translate this into pints of beer, glasses of wine, or even units of pure alcohol because the rate at which the alcohol builds up in your blood will depend on your size, the contents of your stomach, your personal body chemistry, and so on.

Americans who are reading this should be aware that legal blood alcohol levels differ from state to state. I've recently heard some talk about the use of personal breathalyzers, so that you can determine whether you are "safe" to drive; but apparently these things are not always reliable.
