According to Wikipedia it was developed in 1942 by Permacel, which was then a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson but is now Japanese-owned. I didn't see any reference to this claim to fame on the Permacel website, though, and they are still in the same line of business so you would have thought they might advertise such a pedigree.
All about the episode where the unthinkable happens at Possum Lodge: there is no duct tape anywhere in the area and the local hardware store is back-ordered for two weeks!
