During my last visit to Wrigley Field, I noticed two circular dirt patches, on either side of home plate. These were not the on-deck circles, as they were located closer to each dugout. Are they the original on-deck circles or do they serve another purpose?

Well, with the help of a suggestion or two from the History Maven, a serious baseball fan who's spent time at Wrigley Field, I've decided that you're talking about fungo circles, LP. They are where coaches stand with fungo bats to hit practice balls to infielders and outfielders.
I checked out some USGS photos of other stadiums and noted that not all of them seem to have these circles. Fenway Park does, though.

Strange...but seems sensible enough. Thanks!
