Chambers Dictionary defines the word as self-control. The Encratites were a sect in the early Christian church who abstained from meat, wine and sex. Apr 25 05, 3:06 PM

Very nice, TT. More broadly, "encraty" can defined as mastery over the senses or abstinence from all sensual pleasures. Not a condition in which I'm ever likely to find myself. Apr 25 05, 3:15 PM
