Well, yes, there is a relationship, though you don't absolutely have to be religious to achieve encraty. It could certainly help.

Chambers Dictionary defines the word as self-control. The Encratites were a sect in the early Christian church who abstained from meat, wine and sex.

Very nice, TT. More broadly, "encraty" can defined as mastery over the senses or abstinence from all sensual pleasures.
Not a condition in which I'm ever likely to find myself.

I don't plan on it either; I like meat, and I want to have a family.
By the way, abstination from marriage and meat is listed in 1 Timothy 4 as a trait of those who "depart from the faith".

Well, the Encratites were more or less Gnostics, whereas mainstream Christianity, despite some unfortunate excesses, has tended to focus on the practical. No sex=no Christians.
