Starting with a population of wolves and using selective breeding only, within about how many generations could I expect to produce something like a chihuahua?

Question #56924. Asked by gmackematix. (Apr 27 05 12:21 AM)

Do you really want a chihuahua? I don't recommend them. Yappy little things.

This site is suggesting that it would take something like 30-40 generations, and you need some hormonally-challenged wolves to begin with.

Oh, I don't want a chihuahua. This is purely a thought experiment.
Well the answer to question 16 on your interesting site suggests it would take 30 to 40 generations just to create an animal like the domestic dog from wolves. I imagine to create a domestic dog as different in shape as the chihuahua would surely take a few more than that.

I don't doubt it. I was just trying to offer some basic perimeters. But surely, if you're willing to settle for a German Shepherd or even a Lab of some kind, you could probably work it all out within 30 generations.

Population density is the average number of people per square mile. Which country would you expect to have a lower population density, Norway or Italy? Why?

A person has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents and so on backwards through the generations. If we go back 40 generations, about 1200 years, this gives each person on Earth over a million million ancestors, many times more than the population of the entire Earth! Where does the logic break down? Are we all very inbred?

In forestry it applies to the selective removal of trees. In agriculture it applies to the selective removal of flowers, fruits, shoots, seedlings, or young plants. And in digital geometry it applies to the transformation of a digital image into a simplified, but topologically equivalent image. What is the French word for all of the above in addition to a crepuscular ray (and no, I'm not looking for rayon crépusculaire)?
