Well, football-type games have been played in England and elsewhere since ancient times and Shakespeare makes two references to football in his plays ("King Lear" and "A Comedy of Errors").
The variants played at public schools lead to the Cambridge Rules, drawn up in 1848 which closely resembled the modern game. The first meeting of the Football Association in 1863 led to important decisions such as no running and carrying the ball or kicking players in the shins.

There's a wonderful late 16th-century Florentine painting in the Ringling Museum in Florida, depicting "Calcio a livrea" -- "football in special costumes," traditionally played during Carnival or for special events. This painting is dated to about 1589 and may illustrate a football match that took place in honor of a Medici wedding.
By the way, in this painting, the members of one team are wearing purple/blue uniforms, while the players on the other team are in a charming rose-pink. Does any team wear pink these days?

Well, Juventus started with a pink strip and wore it again for their centenary. AC Milan have worn such a strip quite recently and Everton did in the mid 1990s so it isn't that uncommon.
