Why are soap operas called soap operas?

It has to do with radio tradition. The same subject matter was featured in radio theatre and was often sponsered by soap companies targeting housewives. At least that is the explanation I've heard.

Soap companies advertised on all the soaps back in the olden days, back when soaps were cleaner... lol
They do need a good washing nowadays. I am a MAJOR soap lover tho...
