What was the logic behind killing off Maude Flanders of "The Simpsons" fame a few years ago?

At the time (Feb 2000) exec producer Mike Scully said killing off a character was just a ratings grabber.
It later turned out that Maude's voice artist Maggie Roswell left the show as she was fed up of making the commute from Denver for such a minor role.
This was the main reason Maude Flanders joined Bleeding Gums Murphy, Dr. Marvin Monroe, Beatrice Simmons, Frank Grimes, Snowball I and all the other dear departed members of Springfield.
