How did the London Carting Lane get its nickname of Farting Lane?

    Question #57009. Asked by Flem-ish. (May 02 05 9:03 AM)

The logical answer would be from rhyming slang- Horse and cart being fart.
It's also raspberry tart, hence blow a raspberry.

The rhyme seems the most obvious answer, but there may be others.

There’s a gas lamp in Carting Lane which is lit (permanently, day and night) by gas from the sewers. Did this perhaps remind people of the amusing pastime of setting light to one’s farts?

Or perhaps carriages used to be parked there to await the exit of visitors to the Savoy, and the horses often farted.

Gas lamps, sewers and a famous hotel are involved.(Hint: Carting Lane is off the Strand.)

The gas lamps were indeed lit by the gases rising from the sewers of the Savoy Hotel. Not a very fragrant gas and not a very fragrant Lane, one might think. So when at a given moment Carting Lane was mistakenly listed as Farting Lane, the typographical error seems to have stuck.Guess TT's answer is close enough to be worth a Yay.

The name Cloak Lane, EC4, London may sound as if this lane was originally a nice romantic street where gentlemen might spread their cloaks for elegant ladies, but in true fact Cloak Lane was a very messy lane, and the Cloak was not a cloak at all, but derived from a Latin word for a place where messy things flush out. What Latin word ?
