how to tell between lizards and salamanders:
lizards: have scales, have nails, are dry, lay eggs on land (or don't lay eggs), have 5 toes, no larval stage etc.
salamanders: no scales, no nails, are wet, lay eggs on water (or on very moist places... they're like frog spawn), have less than 5 toes, don't climb trees, many times have a larval stage (aquatic) etc.
there are tons more of course... but those are the only ones that come to mind right now.

The easiest way to tell is that Geckos can stick to walls. Only a few reptiles can do this, but no amphibians can.

sure they can. Tree frogs definately can. And if they can't stick to walls... how did my salamander escape?

They can stick to walls - but not in the way that geckos can.
