The median age is 24.3 years. There are a lot of stats and graphs on thi site, but nothig on avaerages:
The world's population is aging relatively quickly. From 1950 to 2000, the percentage of children 0-14 in the world fell from 34 percent of total world population to only 30 percent, while the number of people over 60 increased from 8 percent to 10 percent. The United Nations projects that by 2050, the number of children will fall to only 21 percent of total world population, while the number of people over 60 will reach 21 percent.
This increase in aging, however, is not distributed proportionately around the world. The developed world is aging rapidly, while the developing regions lag behind in this trend. In the developing world, children 0-14 made up 38 percent of the population in 1950 and fell to 33 percent in 2000, while the percentage of people over 60 increased from 6 percent to 8 percent.
These might seem like small differences but they translate to large differences in median age. The median age in the developing world was 24.3 years in 2000, while for the developed world it was 37.4 years. By 2050, the United Nations projects that the median age in the developing world will reach 35 years, while in the developed world it will be an unprecedented 46.4 years.
