"The history of pickles stretches so far back into antiquity that no definite time has been established for their origin, but they are estimated to be over 4,000 years old."

They are mention in the Bible, praised by Aristotle, used by Cleopatra, eaten by Julius Caesar - the list goes on:

If the question refers to pickles made from cucumbers, an article found on many websites says,

"The earliest known examples are cucumbers that are known to have been pickled some time around 2030 BC in Mesopotamia, when inhabitants from northern India brought cucumber seeds to the Tigris valley."

I tend to doubt such an exact date. Throwing further doubt upon the reliability of the article is the very next sentence:

"Pickles are mentioned at least twice in the Bible (Numbers 11:5 and Isaiah 1:8)..."

Yes, cucumbers are mentioned, but they weren't pickled.

This interesting article goes further back in history to pickled stickers:

"Neolithic peoples in Europe fermented nettles, cardoons, and new growths of willow trees to make sour soups."

    Neolithic? That's New Stone Age--between 8000 B.C. and 6000 B.C.

This site makes a less exact and therefore more credible estimate:

"Pickles have been around for about 4,000 years."

They also claim recent breakthroughs facilitated by their company in conjunction with NCSU enables them to make a better pickle.

In any case, you can bet whatever and however the ancients pickled, the product was quite different from a crisp Vlasic.

Bottom line--I'm guessing the pickle came from India.
