    Question #57251. gmackematix asks:

What specifically do English shires, Gregorian chants, Persian satraps, Kandahar in Afghanistan, Sanssouci Palace and the Kremlin all have in common?

    peasypod

Alexander the Great and Hellenistic civilization comes to mind with the shires, chants, Kandahar and the Kremlin but I'd need to do some research to be sure and accurate of my blatent stab in the dark...

Hold on a sec, Ol' Freddie the Great would connect a few too....Specially the Ambrosian chant thingy and the satraps...

We just wanted to make sure we were following peasy's train of thought, so just to clarify:

    The Great Horse
    Gregory the Great
    Cyrus the Great (for one)
    Alexander the Great
    Frederick the Great
Ivan the Great Belltower, in the Kremlin

    Have we got that right?

Well, Cobb, as Peasy just about had you have that the link is "The Great" and you have almost all the correct links so deserve a big yay. The connections are in full:
Some credit the shire system in England to Alfred the Great
Gregorian Chants are named after Pope Gregory the Great
The division of Persia into satraps was done under Darius the Great, Alexander the Great is claimed to have founded Kandahar
Sanssouci Palace was built for Frederick the Great of Prussia
And finally, the Kremlin was built in the reign of Tsar Ivan III (the Great).

In fact, all hail to Maven the Great!

...and behind every Great man there's a great woman, right? (Or is that the other way around?) ;)

I think Lanfranco will appreciate that, though Maven the Great is extremely embarrassing. I'll have to speak to Lanfranco about this Maven thing.

I was going to add that the Kremlin is older than Ivan the Great. On the other hand, we completely missed out on Alfred. Mystified, I looked up "English shires" and came up with the traditional workhorses that are called "Great Horses." This is the predictable result of trying to come up with answers over the phone, when only one of us has regular Internet access at the moment and we're trying to deal with other weird things -- don't even ask.

Anyway, peasy is obviously entitled to the major yay here.

Oh Maven, it is so obvious Ms lan is head over heels in love, so just grin and enjoy it while it lasts...Happy Birthday by the way, whenever that is (she was buying a gift for you last I heard and she was discombobulated over the whole saga.)

How's about we share gmack's Golden Banana? You did all the research, I just blurted out my minds rambling mumbles...

OK, reconstructed the Kremlin, but what he organised is most of what we see there today.

And a happy birthday from me too.

I thought that bit about the woman behind the man was mostly in the Arabic world - about three paces...
